Yesterday and today we spent time learning why we need to round numbers at times and how to do this. We made a number line along the chalkboard and practiced locating numbers and finding the closest ten. We also read the story Betcha! by Stuart Murphy to find out how rounding and estimating are useful in daily life. We all agreed it would be a good idea for me to bring in an estimating jar with Halloween treats to help us practice. Students are encouraged to use the number line strategy until they are comfortable enough to do it in their heads. Knowledge of skip counting by 10’s and number ordering helps students become successful at rounding numbers. Below is the anchor chart we created together.
