Learning Goals: Reading, Writing and Math

I have updated the Learning Goals page with the information that you will find in this post. The reading and writing goals will take us through October. The math goal will be changing shortly after we practice some problem solving connected to patterns. I have also added the letter that went home Friday about the For the Love of Reading program to the page listed under Homework. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Reading

We are learning to extend our understanding of what we read by making connections.

We can use our prior knowledge (schema) to make meaningful connections.
We can identify the author’s message or the big idea in the text.
We can give supporting details to prove the author’s message.
We can tell why the author’s message or big idea is important to learn.

Writing

We are learning to write a personal narrative. This means we are writing about an experience we have had.

We can think of a seed idea.
We can include who, what, where and when.
We can use connnecting words to organize our beginning, middle and end (gr. 2: first, then, next, etc. gr. 3: a few minutes later, meanwhile, afterward, etc.).
We can write details that paint pictures for the reader.
We can conclude with a personal reaction (why the experience is important/how you felt).

Math

We are learning to create, talk about and extend growing and shrinking patterns.

We can identify what comes next in a pattern using the pattern rule.
We can create a number pattern if we are given the rule or see the pattern on a number line or hundreds chart.
We can use given parts (terms) of a pattern to determine parts (terms) that are missing.
We can talk about patterns using math words (add, subtract, growing, shrinking, rule).
We can solve problems using what we know about patterning.
